Counting down to 7th Jan 2009

With only 9 days left to go, SMU Art Fest 2009 is almost around the corner. After going through all the final drafted designs with Khim, we managed to decide and confirm the location for all the art pieces.

Initially, i didn't really thought i can have the opportunity to participate. Ever since i was exposed to the Art World in the secondary school day, i didn't even believe i have that sense of art in me.

If not for Daniel, i won't even know about the showcase. If not for Khairuddin, i won't even use stencil as the medium. If not for Khim, i won't even have the spaces to showcase my work. Lastly to my friends who kept encouraging and providing feedback, i won't even produce the nice work.

9 designs to complete and 23 stencils to create, i hope everything will be smooth!

Design Completion

At last, i've completed all the design which i hope to feature along the SMU Art Fest 2009. However, they are still not the finalized version because i'm still waiting for Khim to approve it. Anyway, i managed to recce the whole concourse and have some slight idea of which wall and pillar i'm intending to spray.

Most of the design will be featured at the 1st level Li Ka Shing Library and the Concourse that link all the SMU building together. The concept for this special placement is to cultivate the curosity in the passer-by so that they will ask 'What's next?'

Having said that, each buildings (except the Library) will also feature the one little kiddos and one arrow balloon. The intention is to welcome everyone before they embark on the rest of the more intensive design at Li Ka Shing Library.

Cutting Edge

Following the Eiffel Tower and some other Christmas paper cutting, i went on to help Daniel create a Birthday card for his Mum. Not a very complex design but i hope it's nice enough to 'Wow' his Mum. Will be planning to explore more of paper cutting cards in the future and possibly create another new blog just to sell them.

Paper Cutting Trial

Like any artiste, i get distracted over art work easily.

After Jervis shown me the Christmas Card he brought back from Vietnam, i was determined to set out on an journey to see what i can achieve through paper cutting. To my surprise, i was able to create something using that expensive pen knife i bought for the Art Fest.

The hardest part of creating this greeting card was sourcing for the ideal design. Going through the Google image search, i finally managed to source a few design from the Eiffel Tower, Christmas Decoration and a normal Tree.

Not quite bad after all. I guess i should start doing some stuff to send out greeting cards!

2nd Showcase: See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil

The long weekend i spent with my wife was totally wonderful.

But at the same time, the start of the week has got me fuel up for more inspiration. Over the weekend, i managed to convince my wife to allow me to feature her portrait for one of the showcase.

The second showcase i'm working on will feature 3 photocopied portrait of my wife. But each will be given a different arrow to indicate the restriction; See No Evil, Hear No Evil and Speak No Evil. Basically, the arrow head will be placed on the eyes, ear and mouth of the portrait to simulate the restriction. While the body of the arrow will wrap the face from the back.

Will be working on the stencil cutting on this second showcase till friday because of the 4 layer of tones. But hopefully i can get it done asap before working on the other stencils.

SMU Art Fest 2009: Stage 2 Consultation

The second consultation today was fantastic. (All thanks to the stencil art inspired by Banksy)

Although khai did not make it to see my actual blow up design, khim and exco were quite satisfied with my concept and draft version of actual work.

The process i went through today was quite simple. After pasting the blown up version of Cry Baby and done drawing with the Broken Arrow, i'm left with cutting the patches and spraying process. And thankfully i managed to accomplish all in one afternoon!

The toughest of all during the cutting process was to cut out all the tiny little detail. I ended up having a sore index finger because the board were really tough to penetrate. (Luckily i didn't choose the vanguard sheet!)

As for the spraying process, it took me quite a well to dry up the ink. Other than that, i also managed to spray some of the blue ink on my finger.

Despite the fact Khim has requested that i discontinue to showcase the arrows, i am still pretty much happy about her reaction of the stencil art. In fact, we even went to the extend of generating more and more idea. For now, she have to scratch her head to plan for my spaces.

As for now, i'm going back to create more ideas and stencils!

First Showcase; Crying for Love

Exams finally ended last Saturday noon, but the real event for myself in 2008 has just began. With so much to prepare for SMU Art Fest 2009, i can't help but went to work immediately after the last exam.

After thinking about the concept for the past 3 weeks, i've decided to showcase more than one work. Besides the "Real World" graffiti featuring the arrows as the background, i will be using Stencil Art as another platform to deliver the concept for the Art Fest.

So far, I'm planning for 4 showcase. But there may be more along the way as ideas are constantly changing at the back of my head. The first work i'm trying to deliver for this Friday consultation with the OSL is a small kid crying. The actual showcase will feature 2 adults standing at both end of the crying kid, with the father of the crying kid will be carrying another kid. But the highlight of the showcase is a broken arrow beside the crying kid.

The concept was derived from the idea that when we were young, we were constantly given instructions by the adults. And when we refuse to listen, we will receive all sort of punishment. Thus, we ended up crying. Just like the featured crying kid, he broke the arrow (instruction) given by his parents and ended crying because both parents did not bother about him. At the same time, another kid (carried by the father figure), will be holding on to a unbroken arrow.

Sound confusing? Maybe. But i'll showcase the actual work when it's done. That will be easier to digest!

Countdown...

SMU Art Fest 2009 is probably the only event that i will participate in my lifetime, for Art. Although the next meeting with the committee are only 2 weeks away, i'm already so determined to put on a good show.

After the first consultation with the committee from the OSL, i was inspired to make things better on the graffiti that i've created. But for now, all i can hope for is for the exams to be over soon. I can't wait to start getting myself busy for something that i've always wanted. I mean, which artiste doesn't want to showcase his work?

I do have some basic structure of the Art presentation. But i will have to work double quick time to transform the work from digital forms to the actual wall. By the way, Studio #13 (Studio Number 13) is the only official blog for my world. So do come back for regular updates such as concept trial, sampling and actual event!

Revived!

After weeks of disappointment amidst my mid term exam results and the rejection of Paint-A-Pillar, i finally got a reply from a big event. It's SMU Art Festival 2009!

For once something is correct in my life. I thought Art is never going to be part of me and i just have to go back to the initial routine of constantly studying for exams and quiz.

Thanks to the exco of SMU Art Festival 2009. You guys just brought back someone who can unleash and beautify the Art Scene in SMU and Singapore.

*Delighted*

Down The Drain

After an accumulated sketching for 12 hours, i finally came up with this 7 Deadly Sins. But to my surprise, things didn't work out because 'that' committee was looking for a more actual design. Isn't that detailed enough? Man...

Real World Verse 2

Apex Case Challenge was a real torture to me and Apex Chillax. Despite the fact that we didn't wanted to put too much expectation on the challenge, we still walked away feeling slightly disappointed.

Anyway, i finally grabbed hold of a new set of highlighters!

Real World

Finally got the time to sit down and brainstorm for the SMU Art Fest 2009. Didn't really got the time last week as mid term took up quite a lot of time. After watching the you tube about Daim's approach to graffiti, i finally got the inspiration!

SexyBack Verse 2

Studio # 13

Mid terms are finally over! Despite the fact that i might not get the optimal result for mid term, i'm still going to celebrate the end of endless studying in school! You don't wanna know what i went through during the past 2 weeks...

Anyway, have been trying to secure my style of graffiti these few weeks. It's quite tough because ideas are everywhere and inspiration is definitely going to result in some form of plagiarism. Nevertheless, i've still going to find the missing style that i need.

Anyway i drew this simple graphic during the 2nd project presentation by ACP.
